    Surgical Procedures – Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is commonly known as a ‘tummy tuck’ and it is done to firm up the abs and make them more attractive.

Weak abdominal muscles can be caused by sudden weight loss, multiple pregnancies or the birth of a larger than average baby. Women who have given birth can develop a condition where the rectus muscle stays separated post-partum. This muscle cleverly divides during pregnancy to make room for the growing baby but it is supposed to return to normal during the mother’s recovery from birth. If it doesn’t then the abdomen can remain large and look distended. This condition is called Diastasis.

Diastasis and dissatisfaction with their post-birth body are among the most common reasons for women to seek an abdominoplasty.

If you would be bothered by scarring, you have plans for further weight loss or you have very high expectations for the procedure this may not be the right operation for you.

    The Medical Park

If you are self-conscious about how you look, you’re unhappy with your appearance after having a baby or you’ve lost a lot of weight and are horrified with the excess skin left behind, you could choose abdominoplasty. The Medical Park are experts in abdominal cosmetic surgery and have surgeons with more than 25 years’ experience in the field. Their expertise will bring you excellent results with minimal side-effects.

If you are overweight the operation may be less successful so the medical team may advise lifestyle modifications before you consider surgery. The Medical Park is a caring and holistic practice that combines diet, nutritional and exercise advise with non-surgical and surgical treatments to bring out the best in you.

    About Abdominoplasty

If you are having full abdominoplasty an incision will be made from hip to hip and excess skin and fat will be removed. Your umbilicus (belly button) will be tightened. You may want a new belly button because fat or stretch marks have altered the one you’ve got so your surgeon can reconstruct your navel so that you would be happy to wear crop tops.

If your excess skin is only moderate you may be able to have a slightly less invasive surgery with a smaller incision.

There is also a keyhole version of the surgery, called endoscoptic abdominoplasty, a procedure that tightens your abdominal muscles without removing any fat.

After surgery your wounds will be dressed and you will have drainage tubes placed in them to prevent blood from pooling at the surgical site. You will be given painkillers and encouraged to get mobile to prevent the formation of blood clots.

A full abdominoplasty usually requires a hospital stay of two or three days but if you are having an endoscopic procedure it may be possible to go home on the same day.

The vast majority of operations are uncomplicated but you may experience pain, excessive bleeding or infection in your wounds. Your cosmetic surgeon is trained to deal with these eventualities and can take measures to prevent them from occurring, for instance, by giving pre and post-operative antibiotics.
