    What is neck rejuvenation?

The neck is one of the first areas to show early signs of aging. A well defined neck line with good contour, without vertical or horizontal banding can complement a youthful appearance. In some people the neck ages faster than the face making them more conscious of their neck often resulting in them resorting to hiding it behind clothing as much as possible. Although in most cases neck rejuvenation is often done in combination with a facelift as the face tends to show some degree of laxity as well, it is possible to carry out rejuvenation of the neck area alone; especially in cases of individuals who have a hereditary predisposition to neck irregularities (horizontal banding, fat accumulation).

Many factors contribute to the fullness of the neck including muscle, skin, fat and sometimes glands. Various surgical procedures including liposuction to remove excess fat, sutures to support the muscles and excising redundant skin in the neck can help improve its contour.

When the skin become slack under the chin, it can create an unattractive ‘turkey neck’.  Fat accumulation affects the contour of the neck and exposure to elements affects the quality of the skin.

Neck Rejuvenation is a combination of procedures to improve the contour and general appearance of the neck. The procedures that are considered include neck lift, liposuction and peels (laser) for skin resurfacing. As required a neck lift to tighten the muscles and excise excess skin to improve skin laxity is performed in combination with liposuction to remove excess fat and/or peels to improve the quality of skin. Neck lift is the most commonly performed modality of neck rejuvenation and is discussed in detail in this section.

Platysmaplasty : The platysma is a layer of the muscle siuated on each side of the neck. With age it can become loose and result in banding or appearance of vertical cords. Platysmaplasty is a surgery to tighten the superficial neck muscles to create a smoother neck contour and better defined jaw line. It is performed on its own or in combination with a facelift. If performed on its own it requires a small incision under the chin.
